Out of Milk is an intuitive and easy-to-use Shopping List, Pantry List, and To-Do List application for your Android device and web browser.
Introduction
Hi, my name is Andy, and I am a list maker! Lists help me track tasks allowing me to focus more on those tasks rather than trying to remember each of them on my own. Until recently, I have made due using a popular note taking application to support my list making, but felt I was missing those simple practices like crossing an item off my list, adding and organizing items, sharing my lists, and so on. Out of Milk is not just for To-Do lists; the app allows for grocery list and pantry list making as well. It is available on your smartphone or from a PC web browser and sync’s between the two. Also lists can be shared with other Pro users.
Use
The app interface is graphically pleasing to the eye with moving clouds in the background of the main screen yet does not degrade the performance or appear sluggish when changing screens. Your lists are presented on a yellow notepad with a ring in the lower corner that appears to be from a cup. Lists can be started very easily once you click on the appropriate type of list category and enter a title you are on your way. In the app, you can long press an item to cross it off the list. You can set a reminder, quantities, and measurements, price and more. There are so many things you can do with Out of Milk I have to list them from their site.
Out of Milk is one of the most feature-rich and intuitive Shopping List, To-Do List and Pantry List apps available for your phone.
It’s smart. It remembers your Shopping List history, bar codes, and prices. It also understands what you type. For example, type in “2 milk 2.99″ and Out of Milk will understand that you meant to enter “Milk” with a quantity of 2 and a price of 2.99.
Scan products directly into your Shopping Lists or Pantry Lists using our integrated Bar code Scanner.
Synchronize your phone with the website and vice-versa (Requires Pro account).
An auto-complete database of previously entered items makes adding grocery items a breeze.
The Pantry List’s digital Spice Rack means you always know what spices are in your spice cabinet.
The To-Do List lets you add and keep track of any other items on your daily list.
Multiple Shopping Lists and To-Do Lists.

Using the bar code scanner one can enter items from the pantry and if the item is not already stored in Out of Milk’s database manually enter the name so it will be remembered next time it is scanned. List sharing is great and was what really sold this idea to my wife. Pro account users can share lists by entering another user’s email address or nickname on the app or in the web interface. This has proven to be very convenient for us. Last week, I added an item to our grocery list while my wife was shopping and the item automatically appeared on her phone while using the app. Just yesterday, I compiled a list for a quick trip to the market I was planning for after work when my wife emailed to let me know she had time to pick up the items for me and asked me to put it on Out of Milk. Too easy! I already had the list on there so I just had to enter her nickname and voila, she had the list.
Dislikes
I have a couple of things to list here, but they are not quite “dislikes” more like suggestions of how this app would work better for me. For what it is worth, the likes, pluses, and features far out weigh the value of this app than what I am suggesting below. It is just that good!
- Reminders. I set a reminder a couple of weeks ago and one today just to verify after dismissing the reminder I noticed I had two instances of the app running when I long pressed the Home button on my phone. One of the instances was for the reminder and does not seem to go away despite being dismissed. I tried making the item incomplete and even deleted it, but when I tried to open the second instance I received a message saying “The To-Do List items was previously deleted.”
- Actions. I have yet to break this habit; I always tap a list when I want to jump into it, but a tap pops up a box to select Open, Edit, or Delete. Instead I should press the play button to the right of the name to go straight into the list. I typically hold the phone with my left hand so pressing the play button is more of a stretch; tapping the center or left of the screen is more natural for me. That is just a ME issue! The long press action marks an item as complete, but I would like to see it bring up the menu you see when you tap the item. Then, to mark items as complete a check box to the left of the item might help toggle its completion status.
Summary
The Out of Milk app and web interface have a lot going for them and for the one time price of $4.99 list makers will get a unique experience that will fill the void left from similar applications on the market. Combine all the features and the flexibility to create/modify lists from the web or phone and you have a WINNER! You can download the app from the market HERE.
